Leaving behind my birthplace that I once was proud of... I was born in Port Glasgow in 1952 and had a good childhood full of both good and bad memories that have built me into the person that I am today and you know what! I wouldn't have had it any other way! The bloody driver was right about one thing though!! Port Glasgow is like a ghost town after dark.. Back in the days of the 60's/70's when there was plenty of work in the shipyards and on the building sites you could walk in and out of two jobs in a day and have a third to start the next day if you didn't like it..that is fact not bullshit!! I once had someone ask if I could start a job and he never even asked if I ever even wanted to be a brain surgeon (That is Bullshit) Yes it was that easy!! Port Glasgow and Greenock was heaving with work but still some thought they didn't have to work and opted for the easy route to the dole office instead! Back in those days by which I mean the good old days all you had to worry about were the wine swirling bear guzzling men and women out for a good time and yes maybe looking to get into some lassie's knickers ( No not wearing Them) or a battle at the Cragburn or Burtons dance hall or both knickers and a battle. As a young man I had my share of good fortune but none better than to go to sea on the Weather Boats that used to sail from the James Watt Dock! I loved my deckhands job or Junior Ordinary Seaman!! Well we all have to start somewhere and mine was around 07:30am on a very cold and winter morning with a loud knock on my grandfaithers door!! Mr Beatie from the Admiralty was standing there!! Is young Davey there he said..he never showed this mornin on deck and the Reporter leaves at high tide 10:00am! Naw exclaimed my grandfaither he never came home last night and I hivnae a clue wur he is..at that Mr Beatie walked into the bedroom and got me out of my pit and asked me if I wanted a job ( Told you so ) I didn't know what to say so he said come on wee man ye'll love the watter! I said that I had a job already and he said but does it get you 6 weeks wages to spend on young lassies when ye get hame tae the docks in yer faded denim and gallous Terry's!(Tan Shoes)! come on it's a good life if ye kin pit up wi bein a wee bit sea sick fur a day or two ye'll be fine!! well always being up for the challenge I said yes ok..Dae a get on'y o yon rum..Lying bastard said aye lad! a tot o yon rum a day and a good Tan!! Wit I said it's bloody freezing and its winter..he said aye a wind tan laddie a wind tan..What the hell did I just let myself in for..( To be Continued)
